History of “The Corner”

State 38 Distilling’s The Corner Saloon resides in one of the oldest wooden storefronts in Colorado. This building, made of old growth pine, was originally built by James P. Mallon and Henry Chamberlain as a meat market in 1871, when Colorado was still a territory. Here they chopped steak, pork, sausage and more upon marble slabs in the space, no larger than today’s corner room, selling meat at prices from 4 to 12 1/2 cents. Behind this western façade and the corner double doors, Chamberlain continued serving the townspeople until the eve of statehood.  When Colorado became the 38th State on August 1, 1876, the corner became Ferry’s Photographic Novelty, selling fun and interesting photos.

In 1877, the building became the shoe shop of William “Dock” Montgomery, early partner of Golden’s own William L. Douglas, who went on to become a nationally famous shoemaker and Massachusetts Governor. At the beginning of 1878, the place then became home to Richard Lichtenheld’s barber shop. Dick the Barber, a wounded Union Civil War veteran from Germany, was a popular town personality, offering haircuts and shaves here in comfortable velvet chairs. He was the favorite barber of Senator Henry M. Teller, proprietor of the Teller House Hotel in Central City.  In 1881, Lichtenheld moved to the brand new Haas Block next door, while the corner became the Parlor Drugstore of Greathouse & Oram. Druggist Robert O. Oram sold pharmaceuticals made from plants grown inside and, after being a drugstore through the 1880s, it once again transformed, this time into the cigar store of Frank D. Hines and S.P. Moore throughout the 1890s. By 1897, it had become a confectionery and tobacco store owned by John Nicholls, Jr., son of the sheriff.

In 1900, proprietors G.W. Cook and Hugh Cox started an ice cream parlor in the addition. Cook adopted the folk name by which the place had become known, The Corner, selling Lincoln Lemonade, Saratoga Lemonade and other popular soft drinks, milk shakes and ice cream soda.

Soon, The Corner Confectionery & Lunch Room became a full-fledged restaurant and moved down to Ford Street. That’s when, in 1905, Dick the Barber returned, with a new shop he operated with partner Billy Gray, and The Corner Barber Shop opened its doors.  For 111 years the
barber shop operated here, passing through countless customers and many owners.

Today this historic space has been opened back up to its 19th Century dimensions. The pine wood floors are back and it is once again known as The Corner, as it was a century ago.
